ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Coming off a solid win over Olivet Nazarene University on Tuesday, the Marian University baseball team picked up a sweep on Wednesday at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Fla., to bring its overall record back to .500 at 3-3.

The Knights opened the day with a 9-5 victory over Ohio Dominican University before coming away with a 3-0 shutout win over Aquinas to avenge yesterday's 9-2 defeat. The Knights rode the backs of two lefthanded pitchers en route to their second and third straight victories.

ODU opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but the Knights answered with a pair of RBI-singles off the bat of sophomore Evan Schludecker (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and junior Todd Ungru (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) to tie the score, 2-2.

MU took a one-run lead on another RBI-single by Ungru, but ODU, after two scoreless innings, posted a pair in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. A scorless seventh inning was followed by a two-run eighth by the Knights to regain the lead. Junior Jake Mullis (Coatesville, Ind./North Putnam) hit an RBI-single, and junior Cory Emmons (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran), who was pinch-hitting, brought Mullis home with an RBI-single to give the Knights a 5-4 lead.

ODU responded with one in the bottom half to tie the game and set the stage for a dramatic ninth inning.

The Knights seized that drama and blew a hole in the sails of the Panthers with a four-run ninth to put the game out of reach. Ungru drove in his third run of the game with a single, and he was followed by an RBI-single by senior Tony Goodpaster (Avon, Ind./Wabash) that put the Knights up 7-5. Freshman Joel Solis (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) finished the scoring with two-run double that put the Knights up by a 9-5 margin heading into the final half inning.

Sophomore Ben Walters (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) closed out a complete game with a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the team's second straight win and his first of the season. Walters allowed five earned runs over nine innings and struck out four in the complete game victory.

Ungru led the Knights after he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Mullis finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Solis had his first career double and two RBI.

Senior lefthander Ricky Parrish (Avon, Ind./Avon) was the story in game two as he threw a masterpiece. Parrish threw a complete game, four-hit shutout as the Knights earned a 3-0 victory over Aquinas College (Mich.) to avenge a 9-2 defeat yesterday.

Parrish threw 73 pitches over seven innings, struck out five batters, and walked none to earn his first win of the season. Yesterday, he picked up his first save of the season as he closed out the Knights' 5-3 win over Olivet Nazarene.

The run support came on an RBI-single by Mullis in the first inning and smart base-running. Junior Bobby Willis (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) got caught in a rundown in the second inning that allowed Marschand to score from third on a double steal. While in the third inning, senior Patrick Midla (Brownsburg, Ind./Bethesda Christian) grounded into a double play which allowed Schludecker to score and put the Knights up 3-0.

The rest was on Parrish's shoulders and he held steady throughout to give the Knights their third straight win and bring their record back to .500 at 3-3.

Mullis went 2-for-3 to lead the Knights, while Schludecker, Ungru, and sophomore James Storms (Camby, Ind./Plainfield) each had a hit for MU.

The Knights will close out their spring trip when they head back to the Ormond Beach Sports Complex on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the University of St. Francis (Ill.). First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
