INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University men's tennis team kept pace at the top of the Crossroads League with a 6-3 victory over Goshen College on Thursday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts. The Knights moved to 6-2 on the season and 5-1 in the league to stay one match back of Indiana Wesleyan and tied for second with Grace and Huntington.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Mitchell Trammel and junior Tyler Scanlan earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. The Leafs were able to draw even when seniors Andrew Voss and Will Dixon fell at No. 1 doubles, 6-8. The Knights and Leafs went toe-to-toe at No. 3 doubles and it had to be settled in a tiebreaker. Junior Nicholas Batuello and freshman Jason Denton were unable to hold off the Goshen duo in a 9-8 (8-4) defeat at No. 3 doubles to give the Leafs a 2-1 lead.

The singles competition started well for MU as Voss quickly dispatched his opponent at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the score. Freshman Jack Hiatt gave MU the lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles before freshman Ryan Heuer fell at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 1-6, to bring the score to 3-3 after six matches.

Denton earned a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles before Trammel clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Scanlan finished off the 6-3 win with a win by default at No. 5 singles.

The Knights have now won four straight matches and will clash with Huntington University on Friday morning in a battle for second place. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. from west Indy Racquet Club.
