Senior Will Dixon and junior Nick Batuello were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes for 2012-13.

INDIANAPOLIS - A pair of Marian University men's tennis players were honored as 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, the national office announced on Friday.

Senior Will Dixon and junior Nick Batuello earned the honor for the 2012-13 season. The honor is Dixon's second and Batuello's first. The award is bestowed upon student-athletes who have been nominated by their head coach, have achieved junior academic standing and have maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale.

Dixon, who graduated a week ago, closed his career with a 3.79 GPA on a 4.00 scale as an accounting and finance major. In the 2012-13 season, Dixon saw action in 14 matches in doubles competition and finished the year with a 4-10 record in doubles competition with varying partners. He also went 1-0 in singles competition with a win at No. 6 singles. He closed his career with a 30-38 overall singles record, including a 15-15 mark in his sophomore season at No. 2 singles. He also went 19-39 in doubles competition and spent most of his career competing at No. 1 doubles.

Batuello, a Fort Wayne, Ind., native, earned his first career academic honor. He saw limited action in his junior season as he went 3-1 in singles competition with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles and a 1-1 mark at No. 6 singles. He did earn a 13-7 record in doubles competition with a 10-6 mark at No. 3 doubles. He currently has a career singles record of 19-21 and a career doubles mark of 33-23 in his three seasons at Marian University.

The Knights finished the 2012-13 season with an 18-8 overall record and finished third in the Crossroads League with a 5-3 record. Head coach Steve Mackell was named the league coach of the year for the first time in his career.
