INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University women's tennis team dropped its Mid-Central College Conference opener on Saturday afternoon to Indiana Wesleyan, 2-7, at the Marian University Tennis Courts.
Freshman
Paola Usina (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) opened her college career with a victory in her first match at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5. Usina sat out the Calumet match on Tuesday.
Sophomore
Maria Berry (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) picked up the victory at No. 4 singles, 5-7, 3-2 (ret.), to improve to 2-0 on the season.
However, IWU, a national tournament participant last season, proved too strong at the other positions.
Junior
Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) fell at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 1-6, while freshman
Tiffany Schendel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) lost at No. 3 singles, 1-6, 1-6.
Sophomore
Alyson O'Conner (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) fell at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 1-6, while junior
Alyssa Richard (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) dropped her match at No. 6 singles, 1-6, 0-6.
Usina and Schendel took the IWU team to the limit at No. 1 doubles, but, ultimately, fell 7-9. Reynolds and O'Conner fell at No. 2 doubles, 2-8, while Berry and freshman
Amy Nocton (Williamsburg, Ind./Northeastern) fell at No. 3 doubles.
The Knights are 1-1 on the season and head to Spring Arbor University on Tuesday in Spring Arbor, Mich., for an MCC match. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
