GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Marian University women's tennis team competed in the DePauw Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, and a pair of athletes turned in great performances.
Sophomore
Maria Berry (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial), playing at No. 4 singles, earned a third-place finish in the tournament after she went 2-1 on the weekend. She opened with a 7-5, 6-0 win, but fell in her second round match on Saturday, 1-6, 1-6. She won the third-place match, 6-0, 6-3, on Sunday.
Junior
Alyssa Richard (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) also picked up a third-place finish at No. 6 singles. Richard went 2-1 on the weekend. She won 6-0, 6-0 in her first match, but also dropped her second round match, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6. She earned third place on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Freshman
Paola Usina (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) was also on track for a great tournament after she won her first round match at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. However, she lost her second round match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-7 (6-8), on Saturday. Her weekend ended abruptly as she was forced to retire in Sunday's match after falling in the first set, 4-6, but leading in set two, 4-3.
Junior
Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) earned a fifth-place finish after she split her matches on Saturday and won on Sunday. She dropped her first match, 0-6, 0-6, before winning in the second round, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. She won on Sunday, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Sophomore
Alyson O'Conner (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) also finished in fifth place after splitting on Saturday and winning on Sunday. O'Conner fell in her first mathc, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, but won her second round match, 6-2, 6-0. She also won on Sunday to secure fifth place.
Freshman
Tiffany Schendel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) finished in eighth place at No. 3 singles. She fell in both matches on Saturday, 2-6, 2-6, and 4-6, 2-6. She battled on Sunday, but, ultimately, fell in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 0-6.
In doubles action, the tandem of Berry and Schendel finished in fourth place after winning their opening round match, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (11-9), but falling in their second round match, 1-6, 1-6. They also fell on Sunday, 6-1, 4-6, 6-7 (5-7).
Richard and freshman
Amy Nocton (Williamsburg, Ind./Northeastern) also finished in fourth place after splitting on Saturday and losing on Sunday. The duo won its first match, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, before falling 1-6, 1-6 in the afternoon. On Sunday, the team dropped its match at No. 3 doubles, 0-6, 0-6.
O'Conner and Reynolds competed at No. 1 doubles and finished in fifth place. They dropped their opening round match, 2-6, 1-6, and their second round match, 6-3, 5-7, 0-6. They earned fifth place after falling 3-6, 2-6 on Sunday.
The Knights get back on the court on Tuesday when they host Grace College in an MCC match at the Marian University Tennis Courts. The match is slated for 3 p.m.
