CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Freshman
Paola Usina (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) has booked her place in the championship final at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship with a pair of victories this morning in Cedarville, Ohio.
Usina, the No. 3 seed, won her quarterfinal match against Cedarville's Joy Kellogg in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to set up a match with Taylor University's Kristin Goeke in the semifinals. She earned a straight-sets win over Goeke, 6-4, 7-5, to send her into the final.
The matchup will be with No. 1-seeded Germania Bedon of Taylor University. Usina and Bedon have a history with one another as they grew up in Ecuador competing with one another so it should make for an exciting championship final. The two are also No. 1 singles players for their respective teams and will meet again on Thursday, September 24, when Taylor comes to the Marian University Tennis Courts for a 1 p.m. first serve.
Junior
Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) also earned herself a place in the semifinal with a quarterfinal round victory in straight sets over Indiana Wesleyan University's Lisa Massey, 6-3, 6-3. However, Reynolds ran into Bedon in the all-Marian University versus Taylor University semifinals. She fell to Bedon in straight sets, 3-6, 0-6.
"Both ladies have played so well," said head coach
Cassie Lomison. "Paola and Germania should be a great match, but to see the ladies perform as well as they did this weekend makes me very proud."
Freshman
Tiffany Schendel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) fell in her consolation match, 6-3, 0-6, 4-10.
The Knights come back from the regional and travel to Hanover College on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. first serve.
