HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Marian University women's volleyball team traveled to Huntington University on Wednesday night and came away with a four-set victory, 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 25-13.
The Knights and Foresters opened the match by trading blows as neither team seemed to want to pull away in the first set. The two teams battled to 22-22, and the Knights finally decided to close out the set by scoring three of the final four points for the 25-23 win.
However, the Knights were outplayed in the second set as Huntington opened a lead and pulled away to win the set 25-18.
After the second set, head coach
Dan Findley spoke with the ladies and let them know they can play much better. They came out with guns blazing in the second set as they opened a 12-5 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-15 victory.
The Knights wrapped up the match in the fourth set after holding serve for six points and opening a 12-point lead. The Foresters fought back, but did not get within 10 points as the Knights cruised to the 25-13 win and the 3-1 match victory.
Freshman
Ashley Francis (Avon, Ind./Avon) led the Knights with a match-high 15 kills and a .542 attack percentage. Senior
Rachel Klene (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and reigning MCC Hitter of the Week junior
Sadie Dizney (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) each tallied seven kills for the Knights.
Freshman
Holly Wasmund (Avon, Ind./Avon) had a match-high 30 assists, while sophomore
Brittany Miller (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) notched 17 digs in defense.
The Knights had 12 total blocks in the four-set match with four being solo and eight being assists. Francis tallied two solo blocks and three block assists while wasmund had two block assists.
The Knights improved to 10-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Mid-Central College Conference. They head back home on Friday night when Spalding University comes to the Physical Education Center for a 7 p.m. first serve.
