GREENTOWN, Ind. - The Marian University women's tennis team sits in a three-way tie atop the standings at the 2009 Mid-Central College Conference Tournament after one day of competition at the Howard County Tennis Center in Greentown, Ind.
 
The Knights are tied with Taylor University and Indiana Wesleyan University with eight points each after one day of competition.
 
Freshman and No. 1-seeded Paola Usina (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) earned a first round win at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, over Renee Shetterly of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The win is her 18th of the season and sets a new single-season singles wins mark. She broke the record of 17 set last season by Alyson O'Conner and Michele Sizemore. She will face Jessica Stolle from Grace College on Friday.
 
Junior and No. 4-seeded Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) also moved on at No. 2 singles after a straight-sets victory, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, over Kelly Smith from Spring Arbor University. She will face No. 1-seeded Kristin Goeke from Taylor University on Friday.
 
Freshman and No. 3-seeded Tiffany Schendel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) also earned a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Kelsey Mark from Huntington University. She will face No. 2-seeded Kaiti Marsh from Taylor University on Friday.
 
Sophomore and No. 2-seeded Maria Berry (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) earned a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 7-5, over Sarah Cressman from Bethel College. She will face No. 3-seeded Andrea Redhair from Grace College on Friday.
 
Sophomore No. 3-seeded Alyson O'Conner (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) earned a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4, over Julia Horn from Bethel College. She will face No. 2-seeded Kelli Hamstra from Grace College on Friday.
 
Junior and No. 5-seeded Alyssa Richard (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) pulled an upset of sorts at No. 6 singles after she defeated No. 4-seeded Lauren Sunderman of Huntington University in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. She will face No. 1-seeded Caitlin McGuire from Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday.
 
Reynolds and O'Conner were seeded third in the No. 2 doubles draw and picked up a 9-7 win over Edison and Anglin from Bethel College to advance. They will take on No. 2-seeded Bedon and Johnson from Taylor University on Friday.
 
Berry and freshman Amy Nocton (Williamsburg, Ind./Northeastern) are the No. 4-seed in the No. 3 doubles draw and earned a 9-8 (8-3) win over Redhair and Myers from Grace College on Thursday to advance to the semifinals. They will take on No. 1-seeded Kooyer and McGuire from Indiana Wesleyan University.
 
In the only defeat of the day for the Knights, No. 5-seeded Usina and Schendel were defeated in the No. 1 doubles draw, 8-6, by Massey and Delk from Indiana Wesleyan University.
 
The Knights will continue to compete at the MCC Tournament at the Howard County Tennis Center in Greentown, Ind., on Friday and Saturday.
