MUNCIE, Ind. - The Marian University men's tennis team opened the 2009 Mid-Central College Conference Tournament on Thursday and all six singles competitors cruised through to the semifinal round at the Muncie YMCA Northwest in Muncie, Ind.
Junior and No. 6-seeded
Brice Fairchild (New Castle, Ind./Tri) pulled off an upset of sorts at No. 1 singles when he defeated No. 3-seeded Gonzalo Vivas of Huntington University in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 0-6, 10-7. He will take on No. 2-seeded Matt Pedersen of Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday. The two met earlier in the year with Pedersen earning a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Freshman and No. 3-seeded
Andrew Voss (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) earned a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-4, for his first career MCC Tournament victory. He will take on Nikola Todorovic of Grace College on Friday. The two met to end the regular season with Voss defeating Todorovic, 6-2, 6-2.
Junior and No. 5-seeded
Brad Mustin (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) earned an upset-win at No. 3 singles after he knocked off No. 4-seeded Tilden of Taylor University in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. He will take on No. 1-seeded Kyle McCully of Spring Arbor University on Friday. The two met earlier in the season with McCully earning a 7-5, 6-4 win over Mustin.
Freshman and No. 2-seeded Will Dixon (Jeffersonville, Ind./Our Lady of Providence) earned a straight-sets victory at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to earn his first career MCC Tournament semifinal berth. Dixon will battle No. 3-seeded Jack Reed from Taylor University on Friday. The two met earlier this season with Reed earning a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Senior and No. 4-seeded
Stedman Carmony (Arlington, Ind./Greenfield) earned a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles over Joe Rallo from Bethel College, 6-2, 6-3. Carmony will face No. 1-seeded John Erny from Taylor University on Friday. The two did not meet this season.
Freshman and No. 3-seeded
Kyle Luckiewicz (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) earned a straight-sets win at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4, over Brad Goshen from Grace College. Luckiewicz will take on No. 2-seeded Wes Nitzsche on Friday. The two have not met this season.
In doubles action, seniors
Jeff Graf (Sunman, Ind./East Central) and
Joe Nelson (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) earned the only doubles win for the Knights as they defeated No. 5-seeded Basnet and Buschert from Goshen College, 8-4.
Fairchild and Dixon dropped their match at No. 1 doubles, 5-8, to Bischoff and May of Indiana Wesleyan University. The No. 2-seeded team of Mustin and Voss earned the lone doubles victory, 8-5, over the No. 7-seeded team from Spring Arbor University, which is a correction from the original result reported to the MCC.
The Knights look to continue through to the finals on Friday at the Muncie YMCA Northwest in Muncie, Ind.
