INDIANAPOLIS - The second-seeded Marian University women's volleyball team fell in an ultra-competitive five-set match with third-seeded Goshen College in the 2009 MCC Tournament semifinals on Thursday night at the Physical Education Center.
After taking the first set, 25-23, Goshen responded with a 31-29 win in set two. The Knights won the third set, 25-22, but the Maple Leafs came back for a 25-21 win in set four. The match came down to the fifth and decisive set. After going back-and-forth in a set that featured 12 ties and five lead changes, Goshen was able to squeak out the 17-15 win in the final set to head to Saturday's MCC Tournament title match.
The Knights complete the year with a 29-8 overall record, the second-best in school history, and one of the top finishes on record with a runner-up finish.
Freshman
Ashley Francis (Avon, Ind./Avon) led the Knights with 20 kills and a .436 attack percentage. She also tallied three block assists for the Knights.
Senior
Katy Smith (Clayton, Ind./Cascade) led four Knights in double figures with 25 digs, while sophomore
Brittany Miller (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) added 21 digs in defense.
Junior
Sadie Dizney (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) tallied 16 kills, seven digs, three service aces, and five block assists. Senior
Ashley Hanslits (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) finished with 10 kills and three service aces. Senior
Rachel Klene (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) tallied a match-high six block assists for the Knights.
