INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University women's basketball team continued its string of good results as the Knights defeated Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, 66-58, at the Physical Education Center on Tuesday night.
The Knights improved to 7-5 on the season, while the Fightin' Engineers fell to 1-8 on the campaign.
MU jumped out quickly as the Knights took a 7-0 lead over the opening 2:45 and, eventually, pushed the lead to 10-1 with 16:07 remaining in the first half. The Knights were able to stave off a short RHIT run, but, with an 18-10 lead, the Engineers went on an 8-0 run to knot the score at 18-18 with 5:22 to go.
The teams went back-and-forth for the final five minutes and went into locker room knotted at 28-28. The first stanza featured five ties and four lead changes with all of them coming in the final five minutes of the half. The Knights shot just 36 percent (11-for-31) from the field, but had a small rebounding edge, 18-16, at the interval.
The Knights came out of the locker room and immediately opened a lead with an 11-1 run over the first 4:02 of the second half. A layup by senior
Kristin Houck (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) capped the run and put the Knights up by a 39-29 margin.
They eventually pushed the lead to 17, 56-39, with 7:45 remaining in the game when the Engineers went on a run of their own. RHIT used a 13-3 run to cut the lead to seven, 59-52, with 2:09 remaining, but the Knights held off the Engineers over the final two minutes to secure the 66-58 win and their second win over Rose Hulman this season. They have now won three straight games.
The Knights had two players in double figures as two of the four seniors led the way.
Houck and senior
Megan Egenolf (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) finished the day with 12 and 14 points, respectively. Houck added seven rebounds, while senior
Molly Lauck (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) had her string of double-digit rebound games snapped at four. She tallied six boards with four coming on the offensive end.
The Knights out-rebounded the Engineers by a 43-29 margin and won the game on second-chance points as they used 17 offensive rebounds to outscore RHIT by a 24-9 margin for the game.
The Knights head to Whiting, Ind., this weekend for the Crimson Wave Classic at Calumet College of Saint Joseph. Marian University takes on Iowa Wesleyan college at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night before taking on the host Crimson Wave on Saturday at 3 p.m.
