INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University men's basketball team earned its first Mid-Central College Conference victory on Saturday afternoon after the Knights defeated Goshen College, 79-70, at the Physical Education Center.

Freshman Mac Fiely (Greenville, Ind./Greenville) led five Knights in double figures with a game-high 22 points, 14 coming in the first half, as the Knights improved to 8-9 on the season and 1-6 in the MCC. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Knights.

After opening a 4-0 lead, Goshen answered with a trio of free throws to make the score 4-3 with 17:36 to go in the first half. Junior Anthony Furlin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) sparked a 10-2 Knights run with a three-pointer to make the score 14-5 with 14:20 remaining in the half. A Goshen alley-oop was answered by a Fiely three-pointer to push the lead to 10 at 17-7.

The Knights pushed the lead to 12 on three occasions, the last at 32-20 with 3:53 to go, but the Maple Leafs went on a run to close the half. A 10-4 Goshen run closed the lead to six, 36-30, as the horn sounded.

Both teams shot over 45 percent for the half, but the difference was that the Knights shot 43 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range. The Knights also capitalized on 12 Goshen turnovers in the first half to the tune of 16 points. They also controlled the offensive boards with six for 11 second-chance points.

The teams traded buckets for the first 2:26 of the second half before the Knights pushed the lead to 13, 47-34, with 14:08 remaining. Furlin hit a pair of technical foul free throws to push it to 15, 49-34, but Goshen answered with a three-pointer to seize a little momentum.

That momentum shifted back to the Knights on the next possession as Fiely found freshman Matt Dickerson (Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) for an emphatic dunk to give the Knights a 14-point lead, 51-37, with 13:45 to go.

A pair of technical foul free throws by Goshen began a 5-0 Maple Leafs spurt to cut it to nine, 51-42, but a free throw by Fiely set the lead back to 10 at 52-42 with 12:33 remaining. Goshen went on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to one, 53-52, with 10:26 remaining.

The Knights pushed the lead back to five before a Goshen three-pointer cut it back to two at 57-55 with 9:05 to go. The teams went back-and-forth and the Maple Leafs were able to stay within one, 61-60, with 4:37 to go. A Furlin layup sparked a 10-0 run that was capped by a Fiely three-pointer to push the lead back to 11, 71-60, with 1:55 remaining.

The Maple Leafs could only close to within six over the final two minutes as the Knights closed out the 79-70 win for their first MCC win of the season.

In addition to Fiely's 22 points, Furlin finished with 17 points, and Dickerson finished with a career-high 15 points and six rebounds. Junior Matt Allee (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) finished with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Sophomore Alex Sylvester (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) finished with 10 points and five boards.
