INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University men's basketball team had no problem with the Lancers of Grace College in an 85-61 victory on Tuesday night at the Physical Education Center. The Knights jumped out to a 16-4 lead over the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. They would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way as they cruised to the 24-point victory. The win improved their record to 9-11 overall and 2-8 in the MCC.
Junior
Anthony Furlin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) led the way with a game-high 26 points. Furlin hit his first seven shots of the game and finished with a game-high five three-pointers.
The first half saw an offensive surge for the Knights, who shot 67 percent (18-of-27) from the field while holding Grace to only 35 percent (10-of-29). MU also shot 46 percent from beyond-the-arc and scored 12 points off of seven Grace turnovers. The Knights took a 48-26 lead into the locker room, which was their biggest of the half.
The MU offense stayed strong in the second half and was able to take a 28-point lead with 12:54 to play in the game. However, Grace managed a 23-9 run over the next eight minutes to cut the Knights lead in half, but the effort was not enough. The Knights were able to hold them off and increase the lead to 24 with a 14-4 run to end the game. MU finished the game with 20 points off 13 Grace turnovers.
Sophomore
Alex Sylvester (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) contributed 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds giving him his second career double-double for the second straight game. Juniors
Brandon Malone (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Jordan Tucker (Kirklin, Ind./Clinton Central) also scored in double digits for the Knights.
The Knights will travel to the University of Saint Francis Saturday before returning home to the Physical Education Center on February 2nd to play Taylor University.
