GOSHEN, Ind. - In a fight for seeding for the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament, the Marian University men's basketball team dropped a crucial matchup by a 72-67 count to Goshen College at the Gingerich Center in Goshen, Ind., on Tuesday night.
 
The defeat sent the Knights to 12-14 on the season and 4-11 in the MCC with just one game left on Saturday afternoon.
 
Junior Anthony Furlin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) scored 10 of his team-high 13 points in the second half as he led four Knights in double figures in the defeat. It was his 13th game of the season with double figures.
 
Neither team wanted to take an early advantage in a half that featured five ties and nine lead changes over the first 14 minutes with the final tie, 19-19, coming at the 6:07 mark. The Maple Leafs out-scored the Knights 15-7 over the final six minutes to take an eight-point lead at 34-26 into the locker room at the interval.
 
MU shot just 31 percent (9-of-29) in the first half, while Goshen shot 47 percent (15-of-32) and out-rebounded the Knights by a 29-14 margin.
 
Out of the locker room, the Knights cut the lead to as low as three at 38-35 with 17:21 to go, but Goshen would increase its lead and push it as high as 13 points at 65-52 with 7:14 remaining. The Knights went on a 14-4 run to cut the lead back to three at 69-66 with 2:35 to go. However, the Knights went 0-for-5 over the final 2:35 as Goshen was able to earn the 72-67 victory with free throws in the waning minutes.
 
MU shot 38 percent in the second half (13-of-34), but out-scored Goshen by a 41-38 margin. However, the Maple Leafs tallied 50 rebounds (16 on the offensive end) to the Knights' 38 boards.
 
Sophomore Alex Sylvester (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) hit on 5-of-9 from the field including two three-pointers to tally 12 points. He also grabbed five boards and dished out a team-high four assists. Junior Matt Allee (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) notched 11 points and grabbed a team-high nine boards, while junior Jordan Tucker (Kirklin, Ind./Clinton Central) tallied 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
 
The Knights currently sit in the No. 8 position in the MCC standings. They will play host to Huntington University, which sits in seventh, on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Center. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
