INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University women's basketball team used an offensive surge in the second half to come-from-behind in a 69-56 victory over the Maple Leafs of Goshen College on senior night at the Physical Education Center on Wednesday. The win improved the Knights' record to 17-12 overall and 8-7 in the MCC, while the Leafs fell to 9-20 overall and 1-14 in conference play.
Senior Megan Egenolf (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) led a pair of Knights in double figures with a career-high 27 points, and she also hauled down seven rebounds.
The first half saw five lead changes before the Leafs took a 33-28 lead into the locker room. Marian had its largest lead of six with 11:34 left in the half before Goshen would regain the lead two minutes later at 20-18. Goshen would increase its lead to as many as 10 with 5:38 to go, before the Knights were able to cut it to five at the interval. MU shot just 35 percent (10 of 29) from the field but out-rebounded Goshen by a 19-17 margin.
The Knights took control in the second half by scoring 11 points off Goshen turnovers and dominated the boards with a 25-17 advantage, including a 12-6 lead on the offensive end. With 15:28 to play in the game, the Knights would take the lead at 39-37 on a layup by Egenolf and would not trail for the remainder of the game as they closed out the 69-56 victory. MU out-rebounded Goshen by a 44-34 margin and finished with a decisive 22-11 edge on the offensive glass.
Sophomore
Rachel Kenney (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) was also in double figures for the Knights after she tallied 12 points and grabbed five boards. Senior
Molly Lauck (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Knights.
The Knights also recognized seniors
Kristin Houck (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and
Theresa Fairbrother (Danville, Ind./Danville). Houck had nine points and six rebounds, while Fairbrother contributed to the attack with five points.
The Knights travel to Huntington on Saturday where they take on the Foresters in the regular season finale. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
