HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Marian University women's tennis team and 2009 MCC Coach of the Year Cassie Lomison kicked off its spring season in Hilton Head, S.C., on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Knights dropped their opening match of the spring to Baldwin-Wallace College, 7-2, and fell to 11-3 on the season.
 
"Overall it was a good day of tennis even though we lost," said Lomison. "It was so nice to be able to play outside again and get back in the groove of match play. The doubles teams are improving and the teamwork and communication are improving as well."
 
Junior Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) scored the only singles victory of the afternoon at No. 1 singles. She defeated Caitlyn Pecinovsky in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9, to improve to 16-7 on the season.
 
In doubles action, the lone victor was the team of sophomore Alyson O'Conner (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) and sophomore Maria Berry (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. The win was O'Conner's 25th win of the season between doubles and singles, while the win was also Berry's 25th of the campaign.
 
Schendel fell at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 2-6, while Berry dropped her match at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 2-6.
 
O'Conner fell at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 4-6, while junior Alyssa Richard (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) dropped her match at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-10.
 
Sophomore Samantha Jo Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial) dropped the final singles match 6-4, 0-6, 6-10.
 
Reynolds and Schendel fell at No. 1 doubles by a 5-8 mark, while Richard and Crump dropped their match at No. 3 doubles, 6-8.
 
The Knights take on Catawba College (N.C.) in Hilton Head, S.C., on Monday at 8 a.m.
