Kissimmee, Fla. - The Marian University softball team opened up the 2010 season with back-to-back wins on opening day at the Osceola Country Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Fla., Monday. The two wins gave the Knights a 2-0 record to start the season.
In the first game, the Knights dominated Waynesburg College, 7-1. Senior
Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) got the win on the mound going four scoreless, hitless innings. Junior
Kristi Roth (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) saw three innings of relief and allowed just one run on one hit and struck out five.

Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and freshman
Emily Gwaltney (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Knights. Senior
Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) also added two RBI for the Knights.
The Knights wasted no time on the offensive end as Slayton and junior
Chelsea Bell (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) started the game off with a pair of singles. Two batters later, Ortwein doubled to left field bringing in Slayton and Bell. At the end of the first, the Knights led by a 2-0 margin.
The second inning saw an even more impressive surge as the Knights drove in four more runs. Sophomore
Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Ind./Forest Park) led off for MU and was hit by a pitch. Senior
Angie Such (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and sophomore
Elizabeth Campbell (Avon, Ind./Avon) each reached first before Slayton hit a double to center and cleared the bases. Gwaltney would bring Slayton in with an RBI-single. MU led 6-0 at the end of the second.
The Knights had to wait until the fifth before they were able to score again when freshman pinch runner
Brandy Roth (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) was able to reach third after a stolen base and a passed ball. Such drove Roth in with an RBI-single to left.
Waynesburg was able to put a run on the board in the seventh after reaching on a walk before a double brought around the run. However, they were unable to rally and the Knights went on to the 7-1 victory.
In the second game of the day, the Knights took on the University of St. Francis (Ill.) and Gwaltney starred again, however, this time it was in the circle.
In her first collegiate start, Gwaltney threw a complete game, no-hit shutout. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. She was an error away from a perfect game. On the offensive side, she also finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Knights.
After a quick first inning for both teams, Ortwein was able to get things started with a walk. Gwaltney brought her in with a double before she made her way around the bases off a double by senior
Chelsea Young (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). The Knights led 2-0 at the end of the second inning.
Freshman
Helen Rogers (Avon, Ind./Avon) got things started in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single before scoring on a double from senior
Melissa Coutz (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard). The third run would be enough for Gwaltney.
Coutz ended the game 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Rogers finished 2-for-3 to lead MU.
The Knights are back in action on Tuesday for day two in Kissimmee. They will face Waldorf College (Iowa) at 3 p.m. and Missouri Baptist at 5 p.m.
