HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Marian University women's tennis team split its last two matches on its spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C., on Monday and Wednesday. The Knights fell in a shortened match on Monday, 5-2, but rebounded for a 7-2 win on Wednesday.
MU dropped the time limit-shortened match against Catawba College on Monday by a 5-2 margin. Sophomore
Alyson O'Conner (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) earned the team's only singles victory at No. 4, 7-6 (2), 6-1, while freshman
Tiffany Schendel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) was leading in her match at No. 2 before the time limit brought a halt to the match.
On the doubles side, the only victory came at No. 3 doubles as freshman
Amy Nocton (Williamsburg, Ind./Northeastern) teamed with sophomore
Samantha Jo Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial) for an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Junior
Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) fell in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6, at No. 1 singles, while sophomore
Maria Berry (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) fell at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 3-6. Junior
Alyssa Richard (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) also dropped her match at No. 5 singles, 5-7, 0-6, while freshman
Casey DeLucenay (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart) was trailing at No. 6 singles when the time limit was exceeded. Reynolds and Schendel fell at No. 1 doubles, 5-8, while O'Conner and Berry dropped their match at No. 2 doubles, 5-8.
After a day off, the Knights rebounded with a 7-2 win on Wednesday over Bridgewater University. The win brought their record to 12-4 on the season.
The doubles competition opened the match as the Knights took two out of the three matches. Reynolds and Schendel earned the win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, while Berry and O'Conner also picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Nocton and Crump fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-8.
The Knights earned the win with three singles wins, but went a step further and took five of the six matches. Reynolds won at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-6, while Schendel was victorious at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Berry was the victor at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while O'Conner won at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Richard was the victor at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4, but DeLucenay fell in three sets at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 7-10.
The Knights will take on Northwestern College of St. Paul (Minn.) in Hilton Head, S.C., on Thursday. First serve is slated for 8 a.m.
