INDIANAPOLIS - One inning sent the Marian University baseball team to a 10-5 defeat to Butler University at Bulldog Park on Wednesday afternoon.

A six-run Butler first inning put the Knights behind the eight ball early on and they were never able to recover as they dropped to 6-10 on the season. The Bulldogs scored six runs on two hits and took advantage of four MU errors as just all six runs were unearned in the inning.

The Knights scored a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI-single by junior Jake Mullis (Coatesville, Ind./North Putnam), but the Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead.

MU scored a second run in the top of the third on an RBI-double by sophomore Jared Mills (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights), but, once again, the Bulldogs added a run to take an 8-2 lead after three innings of play. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings before the Knights looked to make a run in the sixth.

After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, freshman Brett Metcalf (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) hit an RBI-ground out and Mullis ripped a two-run single to cut the lead to 8-5.

Sophomore Caleb Small (Arcadia, Ind./Hamilton Heights) held the Bulldogs scoreless for three straight innings in relief before Butler posted two more in the bottom of the seventh to give BU the 10-5 victory and the season sweep over the Knights.

Mullis led the Knights after he went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while junior Cory Emmons (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Metcalf and Mills each had an RBI, while Mills and junior Todd Ungru (Madison, Ind./Shawe Memorial) each finished with a hit.

The Knights open conference play on Saturday when they head to Huntington University to take on the Foresters. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
