INDIANAOPLIS - The Marian University softball team swept IU-Southeast in doubleheader action, Saturday. The Knights took the first game, 5-0, before posting a, 5-1, victory in the second contest. The victories improved the Knights to 12-2 on the season.
 
Senior Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) won her sixth game for the Knights, which brought her record to 6-0. She went the distance in the circle and allowed only four hits and struck out eight.
 
The Knights got things started quickly in the first inning when freshman Helen Rogers (Avon, Ind./Avon) hit an RBI-single to left center.
 
The offense continued in the Knights' second. Junior Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) hit her first homerun of the season, which was a two-run shot over the left field fence that gave the Knights the 3-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the third the Knights managed one run off of zero hits. Senior Melissa Coutz (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) scored on an error by the IU-Southeast catcher.
 
The Knights sealed the deal in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Emily Gwaltney (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) drove in an RBI off of a single to left field.
 
Rogers went 2-for-2 for the Knights with an RBI and Gwaltney went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Ortwein homered and drove in two.
 
In the second contest of the day, the Knights got things started in the first inning again. Senior Chelsea Young (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) hit an RBI-single, which brought in two.
 
In the bottom of the third Gwaltney hit her fourth homerun of the year to put the Knights ahead, 3-0.
 
IU-Southeast would score their only run of the day in the top of the fourth off of an RBI-single.
 
The Knights got another homerun in the bottom of the fourth from sophomore Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Ind./Forest Park). It was her first on the season.
 
An error by the IU-Southeast catcher would bring home Young for the final run of the game.
Sophomore Brittany Camp (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) went 2-for3 for the Knights, and Young drove in two.
 
Gwaltney went the distance for the Knights in the circle. She struck out 12 and only allowed four hits.
 
The Knights are back in action on Sunday, when they host Indiana Tech in doubleheader action. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
