INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University softball team split with Indiana Tech on Tuesday afternoon at the Marian University Softball Field. The Knights moved to 13-3 on the season with the split.
The Warriors jumped on the Knights early in game one after they scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, and posted another three on an two-run triple and an RBI-sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead after two innings.
The Knights posted a pair in the bottom of the third as freshman
Emily Gwaltney hit a two-run homerun, her fifth of the season, on a line shot that just scraped over the wall in right center field to cut the lead to 4-2. However, Indiana Tech posted another in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.
MU answered as sophomore
Emily Pusti scored on an error in the fourth, and they added one more in the fifth on an RBI-double by senior
Melissa Coutz. The Knights trailed 5-4, but looked to have the momentum.
However, an RBI-single in the top of the sixth pushed the lead back to two, 6-4, and a scoreless bottom half of the seventh gave the Knights their third defeat of the season and second all-time at MU Softball Field.
Senior
Sandy Corum fell for the first time in the circle and her record now stands at 6-1 on the season.
Freshman
Helen Rogers extended her team-leading hit streak to 10 games after she went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Gwaltney was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run, while Coutz, junior
Mallory Ortwein and senior
Angie Such each had a hit for the Knights.
Game two was a reversal of fortune as the Knights posted six runs over the first two innings to give Gwaltney a cushion in the circle. They opened with four in the first with Ortwein capping the four-run rally with a three-run double. The Knights added two more in the second on an RBI-single by junior
Chelsea Bell and an RBI-double by Gwaltney as they opened a 6-0 lead after two innings.
The Warriors did post a run in the top of the third, but the Knights answered that run with on of their own in the bottom of the fourth as Coutz walked in junior
Jessica Slayton to give them a 7-1 lead. It was more than enough for Gwaltney.
Gwaltney threw a complete game five-hitter and allowed just one walk, one earned run, and struck out eight to improve to 5-2 on the season. She was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored at the plate to lead MU.
Slayton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Coutz and Bell each had a pair of hits. Ortwein had just one hit, but had three RBI for the Knights. Rogers extended her hit streak to 11 games in the win with a single.
MU gets back on the field at MU Softball Field when it plays host to Hanover College on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m. and the game can be heard
