HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Marian University baseball team suffered a sweep in its Mid-Central College Conference season-opening doubleheader at Huntington University on Saturday.
The Knights were able to open a 3-0 lead in the first game after freshman
Brett Metcalf hit a two-run single in the top of the first inning and junior
Todd Ungru hit his second homerun of the season in the top of the fourth.
However, the Foresters were able to post four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. MU responded in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4 as sophomore
Jared Mills hit an RBI-single, but HU was able to score on an error to take a 5-4 lead and seal the win in the bottom of the fifth. The Knights were held the rest of the way as they fell in their second straight game.
Ungru led the Knights after he went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Metcalf had two RBI. Sophomore
Evan Schludecker added two hits, while Mills had the other RBI for the Knights.
MU fell behind early in the second game as HU was able to post a run in the bottom of the first. The Knights stormed back with two in the top of the third on an RBI-single by Mills and an RBI-double by junior
Cory Emmons to take a 2-1 lead.
The Foresters posted five in the bottom of the third to open a 6-2 lead. They added two more in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. It looked as if the Knights were down and out, but they looked to make a comeback in the top of the seventh.
Two walks and a hit-by-pitch opened the inning, and junior
Austin Gibson hit an RBI-single to score the first run of the inning for the Knights. Emmons cleared the bases with a three-run double, his second of the game, to put the Knights within striking distance at 8-6. However, a pair of ground-outs ended the ballgame with HU earning the 8-6 win.
Emmons finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI, while Mills and Gibson had the only other hits for MU. The sweep sent the Knights to their third straight defeat and they are now 6-12 on the season.
MU heads to the University of Miami-Hamilton on Tuesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
