INDIANAPOLIS - After sweeping its conference-opening doubleheader by pounding out 26 hits on Thursday, the Marian University baseball team utilized strong pitching to earn the season sweep over Indiana Wesleyan with 1-0 and 3-1 victories on Saturday afternoon at the Marian University Baseball Field.
 
The Knights moved to 4-2 in Mid-Central College Conference play and 11-13 overall after winning their third and fourth straight games.
 
Sophomore Neil Hackett when the distance on the mound for the Knights in the day's first game. He threw a complete game six-hit shutout and struck out nine to improve to 4-1 on the campaign.
 
The Knights scattered four hits over six innings, with the winning run coming in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Cory Emmons doubled to right center to start the rally and advanced to third on a ground out. Junior Jake Mullis stepped up to the plate and delivered a shot down the left field line over the head of the IWU third basemen for the only run of the game.
 
Emmons, Mullis, and Juniors Bobby Willis and Austin Gibson each had a hit for the Knights.
In the second contest of the day, the Knights worked from behind in the bottom of the second to take the lead, by a 2-1 margin. Freshman Brett Metcalf hammered two-run triple to right center to stake the Knights the lead.
 
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, a wild pitch brought home the third run and sent the Knights to the 3-1 victory.
 
Sophomore Ben Walters was able to close the Wildcats out down the stretch as he picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-2. He threw a complete game, scattered just three hits, and struck out four to earn the win.
 
Metcalf finished 2-for-3 for the Knights and drove in two runs.
 
The Knights are back in action on Tuesday at home against Bethel College. The twin bill will air LIVE at www.muknights.com. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
