INDIANAPOLS - The Marian University softball team completed its second sweep in as many days as it took two from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, 1-0 and 11-3, on Saturday. The wins improved the Knights' record to 24-4 on the season.

Freshman Emily Gwaltney earned the win for the Knights in the first game going the distance in the circle. She allowed two hits and struck out seven. Gwaltney improved her record to 8-2 this season.

The only run of the game came in the Knights' half of the fifth inning. Junior Mallory Ortwein got things started with a double to center field, which brought sophomore Emily Pusti in to run the bases. Pusti was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Chelsea Young. The Pomeroys pitcher hit two consecutive batters to load the bases for the Knights. Junior Jessica Slayton would then reach on a fielder's choice that brought in Pusti for the only run of the game.

Ortwein went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Slayton and Gwaltney each added a hit.

The bats started connecting, on both sides, in the second contest of the day. Junior Kristi Roth posted her fourth win of the season after she surrendered eight hits and struck out six.

MU got things started immediately, in the bottom of the first, when senior Melissa Coutz hit an RBI-single to left field to give the Knights the early lead.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods would answer and post two for the 2-1 lead after its half of the second.

However, the Knights had their own response when Gwaltney hit an RBI-triple to right field and, eventually, scored on a passed ball. MU regained the lead, by a 3-2 margin.

The Pomeroys posted one more run in the contest, but could not stop the MU bats in the fifth and sixth.

Coutz got things going in the bottom of the fifth, just like she started the game, with an RBI-single to left for another insurance run.

The Knights were able to open things up and end the game on a seven-run sixth inning. Freshman Helen Rogers, who hit her first two collegiate homeruns on Friday at Taylor University, hit an RBI-single up the middle to add another run to the Knights' total. Another power-hitting freshman for the Knights, Gwaltney, doubled to right center to bring Rogers back home. Coutz then got her final RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Gwaltney. With two on, senior Angie Such hit an RBI-double to right and put the Knights ahead by six, as two unearned runs crossed the plate.

Sophomore Kelsey Uebelhor hit her second homerun of the season to end the game, as the two runs put the Knights up by eight. This was the seventh time this season the Knights would earn the win by the run-rule.

Young went 3-for-4 for the Knights, while Rogers, Gwaltney, and Coutz each added two hits. Coutz also drove in a game-high three RBI.

The Knights are back in action on Monday, as they play host to Mid-Central College Conference opponent Indiana Wesleyan. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. Listen LIVE at www.muknights.com.
