INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University softball team swept its third of three conference opponents thus far this season, on Monday, when it took down the Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan, 11-3 and 6-0. The sweep improved the Knights to 26-4 overall and 6-0 in Mid-Central College Conference play.
In the first victory of the day, Player and Pitcher of the Week freshman
Emily Gwaltney allowed six hits in six innings for the Knights and struck out two. The win improved her to 10-2 on the season.
The Knights got things started right away in the bottom of the first when Gwaltney hit her team-leading 12th homerun of the season. The shot to left center scored two to open the game up for MU and extended her hit streak to 18 games.
In the bottom of the third, the Knights had to make a comeback after a three-run third for the Wildcats. Senior
Melissa Coutz tied the game back up with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored junior
Chelsea Bell.
The Knights broke loose in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three runs on three hits. Freshman
Helen Rogers hit a two RBI-double to left, before she scored on a passed ball. At the end of the fourth MU led, by a 6-3 margin.
The Knights were able to add five runs in the sixth to complete the victory in six innings. Bell started things off when she converted on the squeeze play to bring in sophomore
Brittany Camp. Rogers was able to bring in another in the contest when she singled down the right field line. Gwaltney recorded two more RBI for the Knights off a double to center. The game ended when senior
Chelsea Young stepped to the plate and delivered a double to center to bring in the final run.
Both Bell and Rogers went 3-for-4 and Gwaltney added two hits. Gwaltney also had a game-high four RBI, while Rogers drove in three of her own.
In the second contest of the day, senior
Sandy Corum moved into double digit wins for the Knights in the circle. In seven innings pitched, she allowed two hits and struck out 11.
It was a pitchers' duel until the Knights broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. MU started the contest in the same fashion as they did in the first game. With one on base, Rogers hit a two-run shot to left field to seal the deal for the Knights.
MU would not stop there, the bottom of the sixth brought four more runs to give the Knights the, 6-0, win. The Knights scored the first run in the inning on a Wildcat wild pitch. Senior
Angie Such then stepped up to the plate to welcome the new pitcher with an RBI-single up the middle. The double advanced Young to third and, eventually, brought her in on a wild pitch. Junior
Jessica Slayton brought Such in as she grounded out to the shortstop for the final run of the contest.
Both Rogers and Uebelhor had two hits and two RBI for the Knights.
The Knights are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Huntington, Ind., to take on the Foresters of Huntington University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
