HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Mid-Central College Conference-leading Marian University softball team swept its fourth conference opponent with two wins at Huntington University in Huntington, Ind., on Thursday. The Knights took the first game, 3-2, and the second, 11-5. The sweep improved the Knights record to 28-4 overall and 8-0 in MCC play.

Freshman Emily Gwaltney improved her record to 11-2 on the season after she earned the victory in game one. Gwaltney allowed six hits and struck out three as she notched her 12th complete game of the season.

The Knights got the bats going in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Junior Jessica Slayton led off the game with a single up the middle and advanced around the bases off a wild pitch and a ground out, before freshman Helen Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to score the run.

The Foresters answered in the bottom of the third off an RBI-single to the left side of the infield. They would then take a 2-1 lead in the fifth off an RBI-sacrifice fly.

After senior Melissa Coutz started the inning off with a single, the Knights would have to rally in the top of the seventh, with two outs, in order to keep the game alive. Sophomore Brittany Camp hit an RBI-double to left and scored Coutz to tie the game. Sophomore Kelsey Uebelhor stepped up to the plate and delivered what ended up as the game-winning RBI-single that put the Knights ahead, 3-2.

Slayton, Coutz, and Uebelhor each had two hits for the Knights, while Rogers, Camp, and Uebelhor each drove in one.

Both teams got the bats swinging in the second game. Senior Sandy Corum got the win in the circle for the Knights. The win improved her record to 11-1 on the season. Corum allowed eight hits and struck out two as she notched her fifth complete game of the campaign.

MU started the game off the same way as the first when Slayton hit a single up the middle. She would eventually come around to score on a ground out.

The Knights opened up the game in the second inning, when they scored five runs off four hits. MU scored its first run of the inning off a fielder's choice, before Slayton would hit another single, this time for an RBI. Junior Chelsea Bell would get her own RBI-single in the contest for the third run of the inning. Rogers closed the inning with an RBI-double, before she was thrown out at third.

HU would manage two runs in its half of the second, before the Knights would post four more in the fourth.

Uebelhor started off a four-run fourth with an RBI-double to center field, and was brought back around by another Slayton single. Gwaltney was able to do some damage offensively for the Knights with her own RBI-double to right. The Knights would lead, by a 10-2 margin, after their half of the four.

A three-hit, three-run inning would not be enough for the Foresters as the Knights didn't allow another hit in the contest.

Junior Mallory Ortwein capped off the game with an RBI-double to center field to score the last run in the 11-5 victory.

Slayton, Rogers, and Young each had three hits for the Knights, while Bell added two. Slayton and Rogers also added two RBI in the contest.

The Knights are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Goshen, Ind., to take on the Maple Leafs of Goshen College. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
