GOSHEN, Ind. - The Marian University softball team swept its fifth conference opponent on Saturday with 12-8 and 14-3 wins at Goshen College in Goshen, Ind. The win improved the Knights' record to 10-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference and 30-4 overall.

Freshman Emily Gwaltney earned the win for the Knights in the first game. In six innings pitched, Gwaltney allowed nine hits and struck out five. In her one inning of relief, junior Kristi Roth allowed one hit and had one strikeout.

The Knights' offense was explosive in the first inning, as they came away with six runs on six hits. Freshman Helen Rogers got the scoring started with an RBI-double to right center. Three more RBI-singles came at the hands of senior Melissa Coutz, junior Mallory Ortwein and sophomore Brittany Camp. Junior Jessica Slayton then closed out the inning with her second hit of the day, which was a two-run double to right center.

MU managed three more runs in the top of the fifth when Slayton hit her second RBI-double of the game. She was followed by junior Chelsea Bell, who hit her own RBI-double to left center. Having, not given up any hits in the contest yet, Gwaltney crushed a double down the right field line to score Bell.

The Maple Leafs broke their hitless streak in the bottom of the fifth when they posted three runs and added two more in the sixth.

The Knights picked up the offense, once again, in the top of the seventh to secure the victory with back-to-back homeruns. Gwaltney hit her team-leading 13th homerun of the season, which was a two-run shot to right and Coutz sent a solo shot over the fence, her fourth this season.

Goshen was able to add three more to its total, but the Knights held on for the 12-8 victory.

Slayton and Coutz led the Knights with three hits each, while Bell, Rogers, Gwaltney, Ortwein and Camp each added two. Slayton and Gwaltney each posted two RBI.

In the second contest of the day, senior Sandy Corum pitched a complete game to improve her record to 12-1. Corum allowed seven hits and struck out 13 in nailing down her sixth complete game of the campaign.

The Knights got things started in the first inning when Rogers hit an RBI-single to the shortstop to bring in the early run.

They would continue the offense with a three-run second inning. Sophomore Kelsey Uebelhor delivered a bunt that would lead to two runs for the Knights and MU would get its last run of the inning off an error by the Maple Leaf pitcher.

Goshen was able to post three in the third, but the Knights didn't let up.

The top of the fourth brought two more runs for MU when a new Goshen pitcher walked in one run and a sacrifice fly by Gwaltney brought in another.

MU got another run in the fifth off an error by the shortstop to put the Knights ahead by a 7-2 margin.

The Marian University record books were edited in the top of the sixth inning when Gwaltney drove in her 14th homerun of the season. The freshman was able to break the single-season homerun record for the Knights with a two-run shot over the right field fence. She snapped the record of 13 from 2003 held by Maria Montgomery.

The inning motivated the Knights, who posted four more runs in the top of the seventh. Goshen walked in one and Coutz drove in two, on a sacrifice fly. Ortwein capped off the win with an RBI-single to left.

The Leafs were able to post two in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough for the contest.

Ortwein led the team with three hits, while Gwaltney knocked in four and Uebelhor three.

The Knights are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Westville, Ind., where they take on Purdue-North Central. The first pitch of the twin bill is slated for 3 p.m. Eastern time (2 p.m. Central).
