UPLAND, Ind. - The Marian University baseball team suffered a heartbreaking season series sweep to Mid-Central College Conference-leading Taylor University in Upland, Ind., on Saturday afternoon. The Knights dropped game one 15-5 in five innings before the Trojans earned a 12-1 five-inning win in game two.

The Knights fell to 18-20 on the season and are 10-8 in the MCC.

The day's first game was a shootout for the first three innings. Taylor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Knights responded with a run in the top of the second as junior Todd Ungru hit his team-leading ninth homerun of the season to cut the lead to 3-1.

MU took the lead with four runs in the top of the third as the first three hitters of the inning reached with singles to load up the bases with no outs. Ungru drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly before junior Cory Emmons hit his second homerun of the season, a three-run shot, to give MU a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

Taylor seized control of the game with a six-run bottom half and added four in the fourth and two in the fifth to earn the 15-5 win in five innings.

Sophomore Evan Schludecker led the Knights after he went 2-for-2, while Emmons had a homerun and drove in three. Ungru also had a homerun and drove in two for the Knights.

Game two was a much different game with the same sort of ending. Taylor tallied seven runs in the bottom of the first, five unearned, to open a quick 7-0 lead. The Trojans added five more in the second to open a 12-0 lead before the Knights were able to score in the top of the fourth to avoid the shutout.

Back-to-back singles by junior Bobby Willis and senior Tony Goodpaster opened the inning before Ungru hit an RBI-double down the left field line to break up the shutout bid.

Taylor held the Knights the rest of the way to pick up the 12-1 win in five innings. Willis, Goodpaster and Ungru had the only hits for the Knights in the second game.

The Knights have a few days off before the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) comes to Marian University Baseball Field on Thursday afternoon. The MCC doubleheader is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch and both games will air LIVE at www.muknights.com.
