Indianapolis - The No. 12-ranked Marian University softball team saw five of its players honored by the Mid-Central College Conference, the league office announced on Thursday.
Marian University freshman Emily Gwaltney, juniors Mallory Ortwein and Jessica Slayton, and seniors Sandy Corum and Melissa Coutz were honored as All-Conference selections for the 2010 season.
 
The Knights also had players pick up Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year honors, and head coach Scott Fleming was named the 2010 MCC Coach of the Year, for the second year in a row.
 
Gwaltney was named the MCC Newcomer of the Year, after a stellar freshman year. Gwaltney posted an 18-2 record in 20 appearances in the circle for the Knights, including a no-hitter in her first collegiate outing. She struck out 115 batters, while only walking 25, and threw 16 complete games.
 
At the plate, Gwaltney was the team leader in batting average, homeruns, RBI, slugging percentage, and on base percentage. Gwaltney hit .449 on the season and drove in 60. Her 14 homeruns broke the Marian University record for homeruns in a single season, which was previously set at 13.
 
Over the course of the season, Gwaltney earned both Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors twice, including the week ending April 12th when she swept both. She was also honored as a member of the 2010 MCC All-Tournament team.
 
Ortwein was honored by the MCC as an All-Conference selection for the third year in a row, and was a member of the 2010 All-Tournament team.
 
Ortwein ended the 2010 season with a .298 batting average and was second on the team in homeruns (7) and third in RBI (40).
 
Slayton is a three-time All-MCC selection, and was also named to the All-Tournament team. She was also honored as the MCC Player of the Week twice in 2010.
 
Slayton finished second on the team in batting average, at .430, and had a team-high 13 doubles and two triples. She also led the team in hits (74) and runs (53).
 
Corum, who was the Pitcher of the Year runner-up in 2009, took the honor in 2010. This was also the third time she was honored as All-MCC in her career.
 
In the circle, Corum went 13-3 on the season for the Knights with nine complete games. Corum struck out 114 and walked 23 in 2010. She finished with an ERA of 2.07.
 
Coutz was named All-Conference for the first time in 2010. Her .384 batting average and .601 slugging percentage helped lead the Knights this season. Coutz had a second-best 12 doubles and 46 RBI. She also connected for six homeruns.
 
Also honored by the MCC this week as All-Tournament selections was junior Chelsea Bell and freshman Helen Rogers. Bell had two homeruns in the tournament and Rogers hit her first grand slam for the Knights.
 
The Knights finished off the season as the No. 12-ranked team in the country, with a 42-6 record overall. MU also posted a flawless 16-0 record in MCC regular season play.
