INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University softball team closed out the 2010 campaign with its highest winning percentage in the program's history, and as the No. 12-ranked team in the nation. The Knights finished with a 42-6 record overall and a perfect 16-0 record in Mid-Central College Conference play.
MU's perfect record in conference play earned the regular season championship for the second time in the history of the program. The team also saw an abundance of Knights honored by the MCC as All-Conference and All-Tournament selections, Newcomer of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
During the 2010 season, the Knights broke eight Marian University school records. MU's 42-6 record is now the best in school history. Slayton managed three records of her own over the season. She now holds the records for at-bats (172), runs (53), and hits (74), in a single season.
In her first season, Gwaltney broke the homerun record smashing 14 over the fence and drove in 57 runs for the Knights, to break the RBI record.
Ortwein drew 28 walks from opposing pitchers and junior
Kristi Roth broke the school record for saves with four.
The Knights also had five athletes named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Seniors
Angie Such and
Chelsea Young joined Corum, Slayton, and Coutz with the honor.
Marian ended its 2010 campaign with a trip to the MCC title game, with an eventual loss to No. 15-ranked Bethel College.
