INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 16-ranked Marian University women's soccer team opened the 2010 season on Friday night with a 4-1 victory at St.Vincent Health Field on the strength of three second half goals.

While the Knights dominated the stat sheet, a slow first half showed there was a little rust on the two-time defending Mid-Central College Conference champions. They opened the scoring at the 25:14 mark when junior Nikki Schmidt got on the end of a deflection off junior Lauren Gerbick to give MU a 1-0 lead. The teams went into the break after a relatively evenly played half.

However, the Knights really broke loose in the second frame. Just five minutes into the second half, at the 50:26 mark, sophomores Ashley Flewelling and Samantha Cook broke into the offensive third on a two-on-one break. Cook slotted a pass to Flewelling, who was wide in space in the center of the field, and Flewelling slotted her shot past the goalkeeper to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

Cedarville answered at the 68:14 mark when a penalty kick was awarded on a foul near the penalty spot. Kelly Wise calmly stepped up and slipped the shot past junior goalkeeper Jessica Fisher to cut the gap to 2-1.

But, the Knights were able to put the match out of reach with a goal at the 69:22 mark and a final tally at the 78:39 mark.

Junior Lauren Gerbick scored the goal at the 69:22 mark when she got loose on the break and slotted her shot over the goalkeeper's left shoulder to stake the Knights a 3-1 lead. Junior Kendra Wilmes finished the scoring at the 78:39 mark when she got on the end of a bouncing ball and hit a shot from just inside the six-yard box toward the near left post to give the Knights the 4-1 victory.

Cook finished the match with a career-high three assists, while Gerbick finished with a goal and two assists. Fisher made five saves in the match and recorded her 18th career shutout.
