INDIANAPOLIS - Fresh off a decisive victory on Saturday afternoon, the Marian University women's tennis team opened the 2010 Mid-Central College Conference season with a 7-2 victory over Bethel College at Baker Park in Mishawaka, Ind., on Tuesday afternoon.
A lineup loaded with four freshman used four singles victories and a trio of doubles victories to earn the Knights' second straight victory over the Pilots.
Senior
Dana Reynolds earned a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, while junior
Maria Berry, the only other upperclassman in the singles lineup, fell at No. 6 singles, 5-7, 6-7 (4-7). However, three of the four freshman helped give the Knights a 4-2 lead after the singles competition.
Freshman
Lauren Paras earned a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4, while freshman
Brittney Horlacher won her match at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman
Kemi Adeyemi earned a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while freshman
Olivia Pursell fell at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 2-6, in her second career singles match.
The Knights swept the doubles competition as Paras and Pursell earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, Horlacher and Adeyemi won at No. 2, 8-2, while junior Alyson O'Conner and sophomore
Tiffany Schendel won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
MU is now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in MCC play. The Knights will return to the MU Tennis Courts on Thursday when they play host to the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 3 p.m.
