MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Marian University men's tennis team opened its 2010 and Mid-Central College Conference season with a 6-3 victory over Bethel College on Tuesday in Mishawaka, Ind. The win was head coach Steve Mackell's first win as head of the program.
 
MU had four singles victories on the day, and finished it off with a pair of doubles wins.
 
Senior Brice Fairchild led the way for the Knights with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. In his singles match, Fairchild defeated his BC opponent, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. In doubles, with the help of fellow senior Brad Mustin, the pair scored the 8-3 victory.
 
Another Knight with two victories on the day was freshman Nicholas Batuello. Batuello scored a commanding victory in his No. 5 singles match, 6-2, 6-2, and took the No. 3 doubles match, along with freshman Michael Higdon, 8-1.
 
Other victories on the day came from sophomore Will Dixon at No. 4 singles and sophomore Kyle Luckiewicz at No. 6 singles. Dixon dominated his match, 6-0, 6-0, while Luckiewicz earned the victory with, 7-6 (3), 6-3, sets.
 
The Knights are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Spring Arbor to take on the Cougars at 1:00 p.m.
