INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 16-ranked Marian University women's soccer team opened the 2010 MU Labor Day Classic with a 4-0 win over Cardinal Stritch University at St.Vincent Health Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights scored early, but were frustrated by a packed-in CSU defense until late in the match as they finally broke through for three goals in the final 10 minutes of action. The Knights are now 2-0 on the season.
Sophomore
Ashley Flewelling got the Knights going in the second minute as she was able to tally just 1:57 into the match. Junior
Nikki Schmidt slotted a through ball into the offensive third and caught Flewelling on the break. She slotted her shot inside the right post to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
The Knights were unable to get on the board again in the first half as the Cardinal Stritch defense was packed tightly and would bend but would not break against a relentless MU attack. The Knights out-shot the Wolves by a 10-0 margin in the first stanza as they carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
After a halftime discussion, the Knights came out in the second frame and continued the offensive assault on the Wolves.
While CSU continued to have a solid wall in the back, the Knights continued the barrage as 10 of the 15 players that played tallied at least one shot. However, after the first goal and for the first 39 minutes of the second frame, the Knights were stymied by the CSU defense. But, with 6:19 remaining they finally broke through and the floodgates would open.
Junior
Lauren Gerbick got on the end of a ball over the top of the defense and juked the goalkeeper before slipping her shot past the goalkeeper to give the Knights a 2-0 lead at the 83:41 mark. Just 2:46 later the Knights tallied again. Schmidt saved a ball at the touchline and slipped a pass to Gerbick on the left side of the 18-yard box. She crossed into the six-yard box where sophomore
Samantha Cook just had to tap the ball past the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.
The Knights finished off the match at the 88:41 mark when Gerbick tallied her second of the match. Cook slipped a ball through the offsides trap and found the foot of Gerbick on the break. Gerbick went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and, after a couple of touches in the box, just touched it over the line for the 4-0 victory.
Gerbick finished with two goals and an assist, while Schmidt tallied three assists. Cook added a goal and an assist, while Flewelling's goal was her second of the campaign.
The Knights will close out the 2010 MU Labor Day Classic on Sunday when they take on the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Fighting Saints at 1 p.m. The third match of the Classic will take place at 11 a.m. between the Davenport University Panthers and the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves at St.Vincent Health Field.
