HANOVER, Ind. - The No. 15-ranked Marian University women's soccer team hit the road for the first time in 2010 on Wednesday night when the Knights traveled to Hanover College. The Panthers pulled the upset of the 15th-ranked Knights, 2-0, at the L.S. Ayres Complex in Hanover, Ind.
The Knights had the early chances as they had four shots with three on frame in the first 20 minutes, but the Hanover goalkeeper stone-walled the Knights. After sophomore Samantha Cook sent a shot wide, Hanover began to dictate the pace of the match. The Panthers registered three shots in nine minutes before notching the first goal from 25 yards out at the 35:04 mark to take a 1-0 lead.

A stunned MU team then took control of the match over the final 10 minutes of the first half as Cook and junior Lacey Hersman forced the HC goalkeeper into action three times. The Panthers went into the break with the 1-0 lead.

The Knights out-shot the Panthers 7-6 for the half, but Hanover was the more physical team in the first frame.

The two teams came out of the break and had a nine-minute feeling-out period as neither team got much going. Junior Lauren Gerbick got on the end of a shot at the 54:21 mark, but the HC goalkeeper was there again. Hanover was able to get on the counter-attack and the Panthers were able to tally a second to take a 2-0 lead at the 55:54 mark.

Over the final 35 minutes, the Knights registered 11 shots with seven of them ending up on frame. However, the HC goalkeeper stood on her head and made seven saves. The other shots were wide or blocked by the defense. The final whistle blew and the Knights fell 2-0 on the road to drop to 3-1 on the season.

Cook tallied seven of the team's 19 shots including five on goal. Sophomore Ashley Flewelling tallied three shots on goal, while Hersman and Gerbick each had two.

Hanover's Jayme Carney was credited with 14 saves in earning the shutout win, while junior Jessica Fisher fell to 3-1 on the season and made six saves.

The Knights play host to the Georgetown College (Ky.) Tigers on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at St.Vincent Health Field. The game will air LIVE at www.muknights.com and LIVE STATISTICS will be available.
