INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University volleyball team made it four straight victories on Wednesday night when the Knights defeated Spring Arbor University in four sets, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19, at the Physical Education Center.
The Knights improved to 12-7 on the season and 6-5 in the Mid-Central College Conference, while Spring Arbor fell to 10-12 overall and 5-5 in the MCC.
Junior Ashley Francis dominated throughout the match as she tallied 17 kills and notched a .577 attack percentage in the four-set match. Senior Brittany Miller just missed a double-double as she tallied 10 kills and eight digs, while senior Kelsee Evans also notched 10 kills for the Knights.
Sophomore Kacie Kelly tallied a match-high 49 assists, tallied nine digs and three kills, while junior Jaymee Schambers notched a match-high 20 digs in defense. The Knights tallied eight block assists in the match with Francis leading the way with four block assists.
The Knights jumped out quickly on the Cougars as they scored 10 of the first 14 points to take a 10-4 lead. SAU closed to within five at 14-9 before a 4-0 run opened a nine-point lead for the Knights. Two kills from freshman Megen Ruff over the final five points put the set away as the Knights cruised to the 25-14 win. Francis led the Knights with four kills in the set, while Miller and Ruff each added three. MU was the model of consistency in the first set as they had 15 kills and just one attack error.
The second set was back-and-forth and featured 11 ties. However, SAU was able to break free from the Knights with the score tied 14-14. A 6-2 run opened a 20-16 lead, but MU responded to close the gap to two, 21-19. SAU pushed it back to four at 23-19 before Francis notched a kill and sophomore Karli Williamson tallied two straight service aces to close to 23-22. However, a service error and an Annie Jones kill sealed the SAU win and evened the match. Francis notched three kills in the set, while Miller and sophomore Becky Gramer each added two.
The third set was all Marian from the outset. MU opened a 4-2 lead on kills by sophomore Katie Kaiser and Evans. After a kill by Francis made the score 5-2, Williamson hit the service line and ignited an 8-0 run to open a 13-2 lead. The Knights never looked back as they earned a 25-14 win to open a 2-1 lead in the match. Francis tallied five kills as the Knights notched 13 kills and took advantage of eight SAU attack errors.
SAU refused to let the Knights get away in the fourth set as they stayed within one or two points until the Cougars took a 15-14 lead. A kill by Ruff tied the score and, with Williamson on the service line, posted a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. That was the spark they needed as they were able to finish off the Cougars with a 25-19 fourth set win to clinch the 3-1 match victory.
The Knights remain at home as Bethel College comes to the Physical Education Center on Friday night. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and LIVE STATISTICS will be available at
