INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University volleyball team earned its fifth straight victory and avenged an earlier defeat as the Knights swept the Bethel College Pilots, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20, at the Physical Education Center on Friday night.
The Knights improved to 13-7 overall and 7-5 in the Mid-Central College Conference, while the Pilots fell to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the MCC.
Senior Brittany Miller led a trio of Knights with double-figure kills after she tallied a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs. Junior Ashley Francis finished an efficient night after she had 10 kills and hit .474 for the match. Sophomore Becky Gramer added 10 kills in attack, while sophomore Kacie Kelly provided 38 assists.
Defensively, the Knights registered eight total blocks with four being solo and eight being block assists. Senior Kelsee Evans tallied five total blocks with two solo and three assists and notched five kills on the evening. Junior Jaymee Schambers led the Knights with a match-high 19 digs in defense, while sophomore Karli Williamson registered 10 digs.
With the score tied 4-4 in the first set, the Knights opened a four-point lead at 10-6 with a 6-2 run that was capped by a kill by Evans. Bethel answered and closed it to one, 11-10, before the Knights went on a 5-2 run that was capped by a Gramer kill to make it 16-12. Bethel used a 7-3 run to tie the score, 19-19, before a Miller kill gave the Knights a 20-19 lead. The teams traded points before a 3-0 run pushed the lead to 24-20. MU did not convert on three set points before a Bethel attack error gave MU the 25-23 win. Francis and Miller each had five kills to lead MU in the set.
The second set saw four ties over the first 14 points as a Bethel kill tied the score for the fourth time at 7-7. MU went on a 6-0 run to open a 13-7 lead before the Pilots answered with a 6-0 run of their own to tie it again at 13-13. The teams traded points again before MU opened an 18-15 lead on a Miller kill and never looked back. They pushed the lead to five, 22-17, before Bethel got its final point. MU ended the set on a 3-0 run to earn the set victory, 25-18, and a commanding 2-0 lead. Miller tallied four kills, while Francis and Gramer each added three kills in the set.
The third set was a reminder of the earlier 3-2 win by Bethel as neither team wanted to pull away. BC opened a 7-4 lead before MU chipped away and finally came all the way back to tie the score at 13-13. After the teams traded a point, BC went on a 3-0 run to open a 17-14 lead, but MU responded with a 4-1 run to tie the score at 18-18. MU continued the run and took a 20-18 lead before a BC kill ended the run. MU scored the next three points and Francis ended the match with a kill to close the 25-20 win and the three-set sweep. Miller and Gramer each had six kills to lead the Knights in the set victory.
The Knights hit the road on Saturday when they head to Goshen College to take on the Maple Leafs. MU swept the Leafs on Oct. 1 in their first 2011 encounter. First serve is slated for 12 p.m.
