INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 1-ranked Marian University football team opened the 2011 NAIA Football Championship Series with an emphatic 31-0 victory over No. 18-ranked Grand View University (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon at St.Vincent Health Field.
Hosting their first-ever NAIA playoff game, the Knights' defense was on display as they held the Vikings to just 41 yards of total offense, including just 21 on the ground, in earning their fifth shutout of the season. The two teams met earlier in the season with the Knights pulling out a tight 19-14 win on the road at GVU in early September.
Freshman Tevin Lake earned NAIA FCS Offensive Player of the Game honors after he rushed for 119 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. He is the first MU player to surpass 1,000 yards in a single season. Senior Nick Bradford also rushed for 102 yards on nine carries in leading the Knights to their second-ever NAIA FCS win and their first-ever playoff win at home. Lake is the second MU player to earn the offensive honor.
Junior quarterback Adam Wiese finished 11-of-17 for 137 passing yards and three passing touchdowns, while senior Oluwatosin Ikudabo caught two passes for 48 yards and both of his receptions were for touchdowns.
Junior Dan Brunke led a strong Knights' defense with 12 total tackles (four solo), three tackles-for-loss and two sacks. He earned NAIA FCS Defensive Player of the Game honors and becomes the second MU player to earn the honor.
Sophomore Robert Palmer added seven tackles and two tackles-for-loss, while junior Jerimy Finch had six tackles (three solo), one tackle-for-loss, one interception and a blocked kick.
The No. 1 Knights (11-0) will await word on their next opponent as the NAIA FCS first round games become final.
