INDIANAPOLIS - Senior guard
Alex Sylvester was named the Mid-Central College Conference Player of the Week after leading the Marian University men's basketball team to a pair of key MCC victories last week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Sylvester led the Knights to an upset victory over No. 4-ranked Grace College on Tuesday before a victory over Indiana Wesleyan University, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Coaches' Poll, on Saturday.
The Indianapolis, Ind., native tallied his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds in MU's 66-57 upset win over No. 4-ranked Grace College on Tuesday before scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds in the Knights' 68-63 win over Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday.
Sylvester averaged 17.5 points, eight rebounds, two assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 61 percent (11-for-18) from the field and 71 percent (5-for-7) from three-point range. He scored 15 of his 19 points against Indiana Wesleyan in the first half to stake MU a 10-point lead at the half.
Additionally, Sylvester became the 32nd Knight to surpass the 1,000-point plateau earlier this season and currently has 1,171 career points, which ranks him 20th all-time.
The Knights are now 5-1 on the season against NAIA D-II ranked teams and have won four straight over ranked opponents in conference play. The Knights are now 14-7 on the season and 5-5 in the MCC. They sit in a six-way tie for third place in the league.
He is the second Knight to earn the honor in 2011-12 after junior
Aaron Evans earned the honor on Nov. 21, 2011.
Sylvester and the Knights will put their four-game win streak over top 25-ranked teams on the line when they head to No. 19-ranked Huntington University on Tuesday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and the game can be heard
