INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University women's basketball team used a 10-1 advantage on the offensive glass in the second half to come back from an 11-point halftime deficit to earn a vital 66-63 victory over No. 22-ranked Huntington University at the Physical Education Center on Wednesday night.
"The difference tonight was offensive rebounding," said ninth-year head coach
Todd Bacon. "We had some strong rebounds late in the game that enabled us to get second-chance points. We out-scored them 7-0 in second-chance points in the second half, and that is what we needed to win."
The Knights, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Coaches' Poll, improved to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in the Mid-Central College Conference. The Foresters fell to 14-7 overall and 6-5 in the MCC. The win completed the season sweep of the Foresters in 2011-12.
Junior

HU responded with four quick points to push the lead back to nine, 47-38, with 14:57 to go. The Foresters were able to get the lead back up to 13 on two occasions, the last at 57-44 with 9:31 to go, but the Knights were not about to go away.

A Reece layup was followed by another Robinson three-pointer to tie the score, 62-62, with three minutes to go. After 90 seconds of scoreless basketball, HU's Leisl Davenport hit one-of-two free throws to give the Foresters a 63-62 lead with 1:30 remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Emerson put up a quick jumper with one on the shot clock and caught the front iron. However, she got her own rebound and hit the putback layup to give MU a 64-63 lead with 29 seconds to go.
Out of an HU timeout, the Foresters turned the ball over and Smithson was able to hit a pair of free throws to increase the lead to three at 66-63 with 12 seconds left. HU got a three-pointer off with a second to go, but it caught the front iron and the Knights were able to hang on for a huge MCC victory and the season sweep.
MU finished with a 20-9 advantage on the boards in the second half, and the difference was on the offensive end as MU tallied 10 offensive rebounds and notched 15 for the game. The Knights held a 15-5 advantage on the offensive glass for the game. It was the 10th time in 2011-12 that the Knights tallied 10 or more offensive rebounds in a game.
