SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - The Marian University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroys on Thursday afternoon. The Knights earned an 8-4 win in game one before they dropped a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.

Freshman Chelsey Hartman was the story of game one after she went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. Junior Helen Rogers also went 3-for-5 with her sixth home run of the campaign and four RBIs. Senior Emily Pusti went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while junior Emily Gwaltney finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Rogers opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the first, but the Pomeroys answered with a run of their own in the bottom half to tie the score at 1-1. The Knights posted a pair in the top of the second when Hartman hit her first home run, a two-run shot, to give MU a 3-1 lead.

The Pomeroys took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third when they posted three runs, but Hartman's second homer, a solo shot, and a two-run shot by Rogers made it 6-4 in favor of the Knights. They added two more in the top of the fifth when Gwaltney hit an RBI-single and Rogers also drove in a run with an RBI-single to give Gwaltney an 8-4 lead.

The junior righthander closed out her 11th victory of the season by holding the Pomeroys scoreless over the final four innings to improve to 11-3 on the year. She allowed four runs, one earned, on seven hits and struck out four in earning her 10th complete game of the season. She is now 44-10 in her career with 43 complete games in 55 starts.

The nightcap saw the Knights jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Rogers and Gwaltney hit back-to-back RBI-singles. However, the Pomeroys responded with a run of their own in the bottom half to make it 2-1.

MU posted three in the top of the fourth when Hartman hit her third home run of the day, a three-run shot, to make it 5-1. The Pomeroys responded again with two in the bottom half to make it 5-3 and added three more runs, two unearned, in the bottom of the sixth to give the Pomeroys a 6-5 lead. They were able to quell an MU rally in the top of the seventh to earn the split.

Hartman finished 2-for-3 with her third homer of the day, two runs scored and three RBIs. Gwaltney went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Jillian Ayres and freshman Becca Twining each added two hits. Rogers also went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Junior Amy Tamer fell to 8-3 on the season after she threw a complete game and allowed six runs, four earned, on 10 hits and struck out one.
