INDIANAPOLIS – Marian University head men's tennis coach Steve Mackell
is entering his third season with the program and is excited to get this season underway. In his first two seasons at the helm, Mackell has amassed a 15-24 overall record and a 6-10 mark in conference play. He is looking to guide a young squad to new heights after an extremely competitive preseason camp.
Eight Knights return for Coach Mackell as they look to improve on last season. Looking to lead the Knights in 2012 are seniors Andrew Voss
, Will Dixon
and Kyle Luckiewicz
. Voss led the team in singles victories last season with 11 and finished 5-2 in the MCC to lead MU. Dixon was named a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete and was also named the program's first-ever Capital One Academic All-District® College Division At-Large First team member.
Junior transfer Tyler Scanlan
brings experience to an otherwise young squad. While he was with the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University, he was the team's No. 1 singles player and was part of the team's No. 1 doubles tandem.
Freshmen Ryan Heuer
and Jason Denton
will be fun to watch as they will be looking to also compete for top spots. "We have a young, revamped roster that has tons of tournament experience coming into this year," said Mackell. "As a head coach, I am very excited to see what this year's team will be able to do on the courts in the coming months."
The men's season will start on Tuesday, August 28 when the Knights travel to Upland, Ind., to play Taylor University, last year's conference runners-up. The Knights' first home match will come on the following day at the Marian University Tennis Courts when they face off against Grace College at 3 p.m.
