RICHMOND, Ind. - The Marian University volleyball team and first-year head coach Ashlee Zeigler opened the 2012 season in defeat on Tuesday night at Seton Catholic School in Richmond, Ind. The Knights fell to No. 25-ranked Indiana University-East, 22-25, 18-25, 22-25, to open the season.

The Knights fell to 0-1 on the year, while IU-East improved to 9-0 in 2012.

Junior Morgan Merrill and senior Ashley Francis led the Knights in attack. Merrill tallied 10 kills and had a .474 attack percentage, while Francis notched a match-high 11 kills. Junior Kacie Kelly led the Knights with a team-high 30 assists, while senior Jaymee Singleton notched a match-high 14 digs.

Junior Becky Gramer and Francis each tallied three block assists, while junior Katie Kaiser notched eight assists and had two service aces.

The Knights get back on the court on Friday and Saturday when they take part in the Taylor Classic at Taylor University in Upland, Ind. MU will battle a trio of teams that are receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll. The Knights will take on Davenport on Friday night at 5 p.m., before an 8 p.m. match against Robert Morris. They will close the weekend against Indiana Tech at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
