INDIANAPOLIS - After a strong season-opening road victory on Tuesday, the Marian University men's tennis team hosted Grace College in the Knights' home opener at the Marian University Tennis Courts on Wednesday. The Lancers proved to be too strong for the Knights as they were able to head back to Winona Lake, Ind., with a 6-3 win that sent MU to a 1-1 record in 2012.

The match opened with the doubles competition and Grace was able to take a 2-1 lead after doubles. Seniors Andrew Voss and Will Dixon fell at No. 1 doubles, 5-8, before sophomore Mitchell Trammel and junior Tyler Scanlan dropped their match at No. 2 doubles, 5-8. Junior Nicholas Batuello and freshman Jason Denton picked up the lone point from doubles for MU with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Knights would have to win four of the six singles matches to earn the win, but the Lancers proved too strong. After Voss fell at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Trammel fell at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 2-6, freshman Jack Hiatt picked up the first singles win with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles. The Knights needed to win the final three matches to earn the comeback win.

However, freshman Ryan Heuer, who put up a fight at No. 1 singles, could not overcome Daniel Sanchez in falling 3-6, 5-7 to give Grace the win. But, the final two matches would not end without a battle. Denton battled into a third set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles only to fall, 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 7-10. Scanlan would make the final score 6-3 with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.

Scanlan and Hiatt are both now 2-0 on the season, while Batuello and Denton are 2-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Knights will remain at home when Goshen College comes to the MU Tennis Courts on Monday. The Knights and Maple Leafs will face off beginning at 4 p.m.
