SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Marian University men's tennis team traveled to Spring Arbor University on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 5-4 upset victory over the Cougars in Spring Arbor, Mich. The Knights improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in Crossroads League play.

The match opened with the doubles competition and the Knights did not disappoint. Seniors Will Dixon and Andrew Voss earned their second victory of the season after they earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Mitchell Trammel and junior Tyler Scanlan were defeated at No. 2 doubles, 2-8, but junior Nick Batuello and freshman Jason Denton gave MU the 2-1 lead with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

The singles competition saw the Cougars close the gap quickly with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Freshman Ryan Heuer fell at No. 1, 3-6, 2-6, before Denton dropped his match at No. 2, 3-6, 1-6. Voss fell at No. 3 singles, 1-6, 1-6, to give SAU a 4-2 lead.

The Knights would not disappoint as Trammel got things started with a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles and Scanlan followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 to knot the score at 4-4. Freshman Jack Hiatt clinched the upset win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles to give the Knights the 5-4 win and a 3-1 mark in the Crossroads League.

The Knights will head to Franklin College for a match on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. before select team members travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., for the ITA Midwest Regional Championship on Thursday through Saturday.
