INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Huntington University on Friday afternoon at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.

The Knights improved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in Crossroads League play to stay within striking distance of league-leading Indiana Wesleyan University (8-0; 5-0 CL). The Foresters fell to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.

MU fell behind early as Huntington was able to take two of the three doubles matches and stake itself a 2-1 lead. Junior Tyler Scanlan and sophomore Mitchell Trammel fell 1-8 at No. 2 doubles to open the match before seniors Will Dixon and Andrew Voss fell at No. 1 doubles, 1-8, to give HU a 2-0 lead. Junior Nicholas Batuello and freshman Jason Denton earned an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles and that point would loom large in the final score.

Freshman Ryan Heuer dropped his match at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 1-6, before Denton earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), victory at No. 2 singles to make it 3-2. Voss fell at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, to bring HU within a point of earning the match victory.

Scanlan was the first to close out a victory as he won, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 5 singles. He was followed by freshman Jack Hiatt at No. 6 singles as he won 6-0, 6-0 to make the score 4-4 with one match remaining. Hiatt is now 8-0 in his rookie season.

The match came down to Mitchell Trammel at No. 4 singles. Trammel dropped the first set 3-6 before coming back to pick up a 6-4 win in the second set. He staved off multiple match points in the third set and set the set to a tiebreaker. Trammel clinched the 5-4 win with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker and the 7-6 set win.

The Knights will host the 2012 Alumni Match on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. before they head to Hanover College on Monday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. first serve. MU will battle Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday at the MU Tennis Courts beginning at 3 p.m.
