WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Marian University men's tennis team put up a fight, but could not overcome second-seeded Grace College in a 5-4 defeat in Winona Lake, Ind., in the semifinals of the 2012 Crossroads League Tournament.

The Knights closed the fall season with an 11-4 overall record and finished as the No. 3 seed for the tournament.

MU fell behind early as the Lancers swept the doubles competition to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Nick Batuello and freshman Jason Denton fell at No. 3 doubles, 2-8, to open the match, and sophomore Mitchell Trammel and junior Tyler Scanlan dropped their match at No. 2-doubles, 5-8, to give GC a 2-0 lead. Seniors Will Dixon and Andrew Voss battled with the top duo for the Lancers but, ultimately, fell in a tiebreaker, 8-9 (6-8).

The Knights were able to cut into the lead after winning at No. 6- and No. 4-singles to make it 3-2. Freshman Jack Hiatt earned his 12th straight victory at No. 6-singles, 6-3, 6-2, before Trammel won at No. 4, 6-2, 7-5.

The Lancers' Daniel Sanchez earned a straight-sets victory over freshman Ryan Heuer, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles before Mike Humphrey secured the match with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win at No. 5 over Scanlan. Voss and Denton earned wins by default after Grace decided to rest up for the tournament final.

The Knights will get back on the court in the spring after a tremendous fall season that saw them finish 11-4, which is a vast improvement from 6-8 season in the fall of 2011.
