ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 19-ranked Marian University women's tennis team closed its annual spring trip with a 5-4 victory over Southeastern University at Lake Cane in Orlando, Fla., on Friday. The Knights moved to 14-4 on the season, while SEU moved to 4-8 in 2012-13.
The Knights opened up behind as the Fire was able to take two of three in the doubles competition. Sophomore Sarah Potter
and freshman Hannah Elliott
earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, while junior Olivia Pursell
and senior Tiffany Schendel
fell at No. 1 doubles, 2-8, and junior Lauren Paras
and freshman Colleen Yager
fell at No. 3 doubles, 2-8.
The Knights needed to take four of six singles matches and they did exactly that. Junior Brittney Horlacher
got MU back even with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. She improved to 12-5 on the season with the win and brought the match to 2-2 after four complete matches.
Paras gave MU the 3-2 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. She improved to 14-3 on the season with the win. Pursell suffered just her second singles defeat of the season in three sets at No. 4 singles. She fell to 14-2 after a 6-2, 3-6, 8-10 defeat to allowed SEU to bring the score to 3-3.
Schendel gave MU a 4-3 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles before sophomore Hannah Knust
fell at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 4-6, to make it 4-4 after eight matches.
The decisive point came at No. 3 singles and it turned out to be a highly competitive match. Potter, who was 12-4 coming into the match, took the first set 7-6 (9-7) before dropping the second set 3-6. She was able to give MU the win with a 12-10 victory in the 10-point tiebreaker in the third set to improve to 13-4 on the year and give MU the 5-4 victory.
The Knights will return to Indianapolis and will take on NCAA Division I IUPUI (2-11) on Friday, March 22 at 8:30 a.m. The match will take place at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.
