COLUMBIA, Ky. - The No. 21-ranked Marian University women's tennis team traveled to fifth-ranked Lindsey Wilson College for a top 25 showdown on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Raiders showed why they are ranked No. 5 in the NAIA as they earned an 8-1 win over the Knights at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
The Knights' lone victory came at No. 6 singles as junior Lauren Paras
earned a three-set victory, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5, to move to 17-3 on the year.
The nation's 48th-ranked player, sophomore Hannah Knust
, suffered a 0-6, 1-6 defeat at No. 1 singles to 23rd-ranked Alejandra Gavis to fall to 12-8 in 2012-13. Junior Brittney Horlacher
, who is ranked 36th in the nation, suffered a three-set defeat in a battle. Horlacher dropped the first set 4-6 before taking the second set 7-6 (8-6) in a tiebreaker. The nation's 20th-ranked player, Slavica Milanovic, earned a 10-7 win in set three to secure the victory.
Sophomore Sarah Potter
fell to 14-6 on the year after a 2-6, 1-6 defeat to 35th-ranked Laura Vergara at No. 3 singles. Junior Olivia Pursell
fell at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 2-6, while freshman Hannah Elliott
fell 2-6, 4-6 at No. 5 singles.
The Knights also suffered a sweep in the doubles competition.
MU will get back on the court next Friday when the Knights play host to the University of Northwestern Ohio in the Knight Tennis Classic. First serve on Friday is slated for 3 p.m. MU will also take on No. 17-ranked Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday to close out the classic at 3 p.m.
