Sophomore Mitchell Trammel became the program's first-ever 20-match winner in singles competition on Wednesday.
INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University men's tennis team suffered its seventh defeat of the season at the hands of NCAA Division I IUPUI on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights fell to the Jags by an 8-1 count to fall to 15-7 on the season.
Sophomore Mitchell Trammel
was MU's lone victor as he added to his single-season school record for singles wins in a season. Trammel picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles to become to clinch the program's first individual 20-win season. He moved to 20-1 on the season. He is 1-0 at No. 2 singles, 1-0 at No. 3 singles, 12-1 at No. 4 singles and 6-0 at No. 5 singles in 2012-13. He is currently riding a 19-match winning streak and his lone defeat of the campaign came on Aug. 29 to Grace College's Aaron Blevins.
Freshman Jason Denton
fell to 11-8 on the season after he suffered a 2-6, 4-6 defeat at No. 1 singles. He is now 4-3 in the top position. Freshman Ryan Heuer
fell to 7-13 on the year after a 2-6, 5-7 defeat at No. 2 singles, while freshman Jack Hiatt
fell to 16-2 on the year with a 1-6, 0-6 defeat at No. 3 singles. Junior Tyler Scanlan
dropped to 10-7 in 2012-13 after he suffered a 1-6, 1-6 defeat at No. 4 singles, while freshman Taylor Kinney
fell at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 1-6.
In doubles action, the Jags swept through the Knights to earn maximum points. Junior Nick Batuello and Scanlan fell at No. 3 doubles by a 3-8 score before Heuer and junior Ryan Hodell
fell at No. 2 doubles by a 3-8 score. Denton and Trammel also fell at No. 1 doubles by a 3-8 score to give IUPUI the full points in doubles.
The Knights will head to Wabash College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. first serve in Crawfordsville, Ind., and will remain on the road for the final four matches of the 2012-13 season.
